After the increase in internet availability and speed in India, the number of smartphone users is also increasing. Therefore, internet based features have started to be used on a large scale. Google Maps is one of the important features. Due to the increase in the number of users, new features are also being added to it. Google Maps has recently announced that the new street view feature of Google Maps (Google Street View Feature In India) will be available in India as well.
Street view of 10 cities in India will be available on Google Maps, including Mumbai, Pune and 4 cities in Maharashtra. Google announced this new feature at this year’s Google I/O developer conference. Google has partnered with Tech Mahindra and Genesis International to make this feature available in India. ‘bgr.in’ has reported about this.
Google Street View gives users a 360 degree view of roads and buildings in public places. So they can get a better feel of the place and predict it. From today (July 27), street view of 10 cities in India will be available on Google Maps. It includes 10 cities namely Capital Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Ahmednagar, Baroda, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Amritsar. With fresh imagery from local partners, an area of around one and a half lakh kilometers across 10 cities will be available in Street View.
Earlier, Street View feature of Google Maps was not approved in India. Because it was the government’s policy that foreign companies should not have ownership rights to depict any area in India. Meanwhile, National Geospatial Policy (National Geospatial Policy 2021) was introduced in 2021. Accordingly, such products were allowed as long as foreign companies did not own such data in the country.
Now Google Maps will be assisted by Tech Mahindra and Genesys International to make this new feature available in India. In short, the illustrations/imagery appearing in this feature will not be owned by Google. It will be licensed to Google by the Indian companies mentioned above.
Google has said that this is the first time in the world that the Street View feature has been introduced with the help of local partner companies. Google, Genesis International and Tech Mahindra are said to be planning to provide street view of at least 50 cities in the country by the end of 2022.
